ALMOST A DEAD MAN - CHAPTER 44

Sean lay on Petra's bed. Her leg crossed his stomach and left arm was draped across his chest. Her limbs' weightlessness defied gravity and her right hand caressed his belly.

"It's been a long time since I've been with a woman."

"And I with a man."

"What about the baron?"

"We never had sex. Never. You are the first in over a year."

"Same for me."

They didn't speak for several minutes and Sean compiled the body count.

"SS Tommy's dead."

"Good."

"Kurt?"

"He lived hard. Heroin. Cocaine. I never told him to stop."

"Why not?"

"He was no quitter."

"None of us are, but we are still standing."

"You know there's nothing keeping us here. In fact there are some good reason to leave now. The police know it was you at the Eros Center. Assault with a deadly weapon is a crime everywhere in the world."

"The Zuhalterai will file no charges."

"So there's another reason, maybe two. Cali and your baron."

Petra said nothing.

"You can't walk away?"

"Could you?"

"Maybe not."

Her desire for revenge remained stronger than her love for him. Sean was glad he had refrained from telling Petra where Cali was or else another body would lay on a slab and that was the last thing Hamburg needed on a Saturday morning.

Sean extricated himself from Petra's limbs and slid out of bed. He went out onto the balcony. The dawn sun had cleared away every cloud from the high latitude sky. Below the bluff the river was empty of shipping and the automatic docks across the Elbe were devoid of activities. This mechanical calm instilled in Sean the fear that a time bomb was ticking towards an explosion, but whatever was going coming their way would have to be met face to face and Sean prayed it didn't get any uglier than it had been. Unfortunately he had a bad feeling Hamburg could become much uglier and he was someone who paid heed to his hunches, because they had a funny way of becoming a reality no one else would have wanted to live.

Not even him.

Two arms encircled his neck.

"Come to bed. I promise we will leave. Everything will be good. You and me together."

"Truth?"

"Yes."

She might be telling him what he wanted to hear from her, but he didn't care. Sean leaned back into her with a sigh. It felt good to be with a woman.
